iPhone 8 plus shows up with "unknown" Manufacturer.

  • App version 1.6.1 (3)
    Software version 2.2.2
    Revision 0-g128d07a
    AmpliFi Router HD

Just finished setting up my new iPhone 8 plus and noticed that the icon for the device in the "Family" tab is a generic wifi device. When you click on the device entry and go to Advanced -> Client Details, the Manufacturer entry is blank. I have only tried this with the 8 plus, but I imagine it is the same for the 8, given the hardware similarities.

Update: This issue still exists under 2.4.0 r0-g173bc6b.

Follow Up: This issue seems to have been resolved with the release of version 1.6.2 of the iOS app.

  • Same issue with an iPhone 8 on iOS 11 / 11.0.1 ( v2.4.0 on the Amplifi ).

  • From what I can tell it looks like AmpliFi is using the OUI portion of the MAC address to "identify" device names.

Search OUI lookup and you can see for yourself the output. I've seen phones show up as the primary manufacturer (Apple, Samsung, etc) or their wireless chip manufacturer (Murata, etc) or just plain blank.

You can name the devices anything you want in the AmpliFi app.

Sidenote: Even though the phone manufacturer is the same, the internal hardware chips for wireless may/can be different.

  • Resolved in version 1.6.2 of the iOS app.

  • I have the same issue with iPhone 8, app version 1.7.0 (1)
