Anyone Tried MoCA Adapter for Backbone via Coax?
-
My house is not wired with Ethernet cables, unfortunately. I have a second Mesh Router now that I am going to set up initially with a wireless back-haul. My only real option for a wired back-haul is to use the existing Coax cables with MoCA adapters, such as the Motorola Bonded adapters (apparently good for 1 Gbit). Anyone tried this? Any reason this shouldn't work? Is it even worth doing?

@nick-transier I had looked at this some time ago, but held off as there appear to be some issues if you put IPTV signal on the same line (I have AT&T U-Verse). Would be interested in seeing if this works. Here is one of the links that caused me to hold off.

@rakesh-gupta Thanks for this. I use YouTube TV and have no other boxes using the coax, other than the line into the house for Time Warner/Spectrum, which I can segregate. I'm thinking of using the existing runs for a point to point connection that won't carry any other data.

I plan to do this using ActionTec MOCA2 adapters and two Amplifi HD routers. Will report back on how it works out.

I setup my new Amplifi network today and it's working great.
The ActionTec MOCA 2.0 bonded kit is giving me 800mbps between my office and the living room. I have an HD Router in each room, with an ethernet backbone between them that goes over the MOCA coax. Then I added an Instant Router upstairs which is wirelessly meshed to the living room. I'm getting great speeds on my wired network, and amazing WiFi coverage and speeds all over the house and also all over the backyard.

@aman-gupta can you share your setup? My concern with MOCA was because of IPTV on the same cable..

@rakesh-gupta I'm using Cox cable/internet. I feel my cable box and cable modem from the OUT port on the MOCA adapter. I've heard MOCA might not work well for Uverse but not sure.

@aman-gupta can you confirm or advise if the following use case can work (similar set-up to you using bonded MoCa 2.0 adapters). The use case is as follows:
- Office (Main Amplifi Router, Cable Modem, Moca adapter and Network switch)
- Living Room (Second Amplifi Router connected via MoCa adapter)
Question: Would the 2nd Amplifi router work in the Living Room scenario? I plan to use the 2nd Amplifi router as a switch (not clear if possible) to feed the 4 LAN ports to wire other devices in the living room, using MoCa adapter for backbone via coax? Hope that makes sense.
Thanks!

@mark-chung-yan I just connected two Actiontec MoCA 2.0 adapters. I've updated my original thread with how it's configured
Hope this helps.
