pihole again
-
Seems like this is a reoccurring theme with pi hole and dns not working with the lastest firmware pi hole if set to dns server just plainly fails resulting in the router thinking its not online even though it is..
and yes I've read the threads here on the forum tried the work around.
so @UBNT-Brett what really changed in the latest version?
with the current version I have to set dns manually in the OS instead of the Router
-
So im guessing by the like that the dev teams wants us user to set it client side instead of in serverside in the amplify ?

I am currently looking into what specific changes were made that I can report on.
I would like to have you work with our support staff and review your system and configuration to see if we can help get everything working. Also, if this is because a fault on AmpliFi then we could do further research to correct bugs if any are effecting it.
-
@peter-skopa I have my Pi-Hole acting as a main/primary DNS server (Pi-Hole IP set as first DNS into the AmpliFi router) and DNS is propagated correctly into my network devices (all of them - aprox 25 devices).
My network consist of 2 HD Routers (from which 1 acts as an Wifi extender plus 5 Mesh points antennas) all being enrolled into the Beta and running 3.0.0rc1.
-
@peter-skopa one more thing (not sure if you tried that, already): flush your DNS on your computers and "forget" the Wifi on your mobile devices.
If you have your Pi-Hole set as your first DNS, this should (hopefully) solve the problem (if it's not related to something else).HTH,
V.

@peter-skopa what block list are you running because there are a few domains it block that are google ping domains if you want it I can find it for white list, I've had the issue before, I can get the domains that need to be white listed if you want them.
-
@ubnt-brett the issue is the Google domains used by amplfii to verify internet connectivity,
It should be user customisable because some pi block lists remove it I should send the domains to pi hole Devs to white list. It's the google.net, google.org, and I think google.com that it pings.
I'll have to double check it.
-
@edward-dolezal and @Peter-Skopa I might have had the problem wrongly understood: now I'm not sure if the issue the related to the router being able to go online after you set your DNS server on your Pi-Hole or having the AmpliFi router propagate the DNS settings on your LAN. Therefor, if it's the first case, you might want to follow @Edward-Dolezal 's reply
-
@edward-dolezal there a block lists that block google.com? That’s pretty heavy handed.
-
@chris-dunlop several some of which even block Gmail, there are ones that block windows 'spying' but also block Xbox services, because it's a Microsoft domain.
If you saw my whitelist it has a lot of Google domains, yes I agree it's heavy handed, but some of the ad list creators just throw I. False positives and call it a day until some one tells them otherwise.
-
@virgil-nicolae that didnt resolve my original problem. in any case ive set it up on clientside less intrusive let the amiply work its own magic
-
@peter-skopa should have tested conditional forwarding I pi hole.
