AmpliFi by Ubiquiti Labs Introduces the AmpliFi Alien

@ui-brett Why can't we have configurable u/d limits (like Smart QoS (fq_codel) I assume?) on the HD units?

what type of WAN/Internet port does the standard HD system and Gamers Edition have? Is it a gigabit ethernet type?
Correct, the WAN port is gigabit on both the HD system (Including AmpliFi Instant) and the Gamer's Edition.

awesome hardware
but....about software : same os of AmpliFi HD ???? No IPS,DPI,VPN server ecc. ecc.
Without this funcionts , I need set "Alien" with "bridge mode" and use a other device (for example UniFi USG) as main router.....

@ui-brett So since you guys been most likely testing these out compared to the HD system, what have been the benefits that you have seen using the Alien over the HD units? Less Hops, I would think, which would lead to less speed degradation. I have a 4000sq house that is chopped up. Trying to make the best choice, and where can you buy these today? Sorry most likely a redundant post!
Brett: Thanks for helpline etc... But I mean live line, not by leaving a message..I know this is a super late reply (sorry, holidays, flu, etc.). I have a 4700sqft house and I find that a single unit centrally placed covers the entire house, but two units cover the entire house with faster speeds. Depends on what you're looking for.
The details:
- My house has 3 floors (including basement) and is generally a square box
- I do have a couple isolated problem areas due to refrigerators and such, but that's to be expected

Can't wait until somebody with a 1Gb fiber connection tests the Alien out and can give us a report on the real world functionality
I've seen peak downloads of 987Mbps and uploads of 265Mbps with my asynchronous fiber connection (1000/250). So I get exactly what I hope for with my ISP connection.

@ui-brett With the Alien will we finally be able to get a handle on the Ethernet ports as in seeing data use and managing those ports in the same way we can the WiFi access?
Thank you
-
@richard-sterling-0 With the release of Alien, the data usage statistics per device are still limited to just wireless connection, but the overall network data consumption found in the app and on the LCD screen will include both wireless and wired devices.

Guys, is it possible to use Amplifi HD Router and Alien in 1 common mesh network? Alien as main router and HD connected via ethernet or wireless?
-
@alexander-petrov No, Alien only works with Alien (Unless you configure an AmpliFi HD stand alone mesh point in 3rd party mode, but this works as an extender and not a true integrated mesh so the performance will not be the same)
-
@UI-Brett I have couple of question:
- Will Amplifi Alien work on 220V power in Europe or i will need an additional adapter?
- Alien support only wireless backhaul, no wired? I was thinking about placing one alien on the first floor and another one on the second will backhaul work in this case?
- What performance degradation I could expect in the 3000 sq. f., house with concrete walls and overlay? What would better solution for such house (hd vs alien)?
-
Hi, I have a couple questions as well regarding this new Alien Wifi 6 router.
Will the 5 ethernet ports be upgraded to multi Gig ports soon ? because it seems a little useless to have such a great wifi bandwidth, and being restricted to 1Gb when getting out to Wan device...
If not, will link aggregation be supported in a future firmware release in order to preserve at least a 4Gb bandwidth to the next device ?
Thanks

The AmpliFi Alien is only designed for the US market as of this moment, so it will not work in Europe.

It can be configured to use either wired or wireless backhaul, wireless will be dedicated on 802.11ax

I wish there was an easy answer to this question, but every environment is different. But the Alien will deliver better performance over the HD. Especially if you have ethernet ran in your home and you are able to wired backhaul two Aliens together, one on each floor.
-
@tristan-spadi We do not have any current plans to change the Alien hardware at this time, so the ethernet ports will be 10/100/1000 for the foreseeable future.
Link aggregation is a feature request that I can put in for you, thank you for the suggestion!
-
@ui-brett Thank you very match
-
@ui-brett That would be wonderful, thank you !
-
@michaele I'm going to guess the CPU, where as the gamers edition one has a proprietary QoS made by NVIDIA, in which case I'm guessing is a licensing issue possibly.

MeshPoints
I'm curious when more affordable MeshPoints will be available that are compatible with the Amplifi Alien. Is there a new product in the works and if so is there an eta on the product release and is there pricing information?
-
@ui-brett so there is no wired backhaul on the Alien?
-
@keith-williams Ethernet backbone is support in the Alien product line.
