Slow Wired Connection AmpliFi HD
-
I recently got an AmpliFi HD and have been having trouble with slow throughput. When my computer is connected directly to my Arris SurfBoard modem, I'm getting a solid 900+ Mbps downstream, however via the AmpliFi HD I'm only getting about 400Mbps.
I've also been having problems with the internet connection dropping out for 30-60 seconds without warning (in the middle of games, conference calls, you name it). The jury is still out on whether that's the AmpliFi gateway or Comcast.
I've been trying the various settings on the interface, including:
- Hardware NAT on & off
- Switch Buffer Workaround on & off
- Running Beta firmware now (was on stable previously)
I'm starting to wonder if this is simply the throughput limitation of this device, and I made a mistake settling for the "simpler" AmpliFi line instead of going straight for UniFi. Am I correct here, or is there something else going on?
Thanks in advance.

Hi @lee-standen - do you have IPv6 enabled?
@UI-Brett has gigabit Xfinity service and has mentioned that, at least for his region, Comcast instructed him to enable IPv6 for speeds above 500 Mbps
You might want to also compare models of modems and settings (i.e. HW NAT, Switch Buffers, etc.) with what @UI-Brett knows is working for Xfinity gigabit service
-
Hi @lee-standen - you might also want to roll back to the latest stable firmware as there have been some stability issues reported with v3.3.0rc1 and it shouldn't be necessary either
-
@derek-saville Yes, I've got IPv6 Enabled, thank you. whatismyip seems to report a valid IPv6 address, so I guess that's working.
-
Hi @lee-standen - you might want to then create a Support Info file and email it directly to @UI-Brett... BRETT.BENNETT@UBNT.COM
He should be able to help you with gigabit Xfinity issues
-
@Lee-Standen Leave Hardware NAT is enabled, because that will be required as well.
Can you give me a brief overview of your network topology? Including models of your modem and other devices.
What speed test websites are you using? (I know xfinity has their own they like to use as well)
After running speed tests wired to AmpliFi, generate support files so the data is fresh for us to review.

Hello all,
I didn't want to open another thread since this may be similar.
I'm having some issues with my Amplifi HD connected to a Huawei ONT, in order to connect I have to use the Amplifi HD using PPPoE but unfortunately I cannot reach the advertised 1Gbps or 900+Mbps, I'm getting only around 700Mbps.
Please note I'm doing these tests wired to the Amplifi HD from my laptop and if I connect directly my laptop to the Huawei ONT and I perform PPPoE I have a solid 950Mbps.
I haveHardware NAT
enabled.Any help would be highly apreciated.

Hi @abpostelnicu - you might check if the MTU is optimized behind the AmpliFi versus the direct connection
If the AmpliFi is causing packet fragmentation that might explain the discrepancy

How can I check this, I didn't see it in the Amplifi interface.
-
Hi @abpostelnicu - unfortunately it isn’t adjustable on the AmpliFi
I believe in the past others reported less than optimal default MTU settings for AmpliFi routes in PPPoE mode
If you can show it’s incorrect you can request it to be fixed or put in a feature request to add it to the web UI
-
@Derek-Saville I see but how can I show this? I can no longer connect to my ONT since it's in Bridge mode.
The default MTU for the ONT when it was in router mode and speed was gigabit was1492 bytes for PPPoE WAN
.
Looking other the Huawei page when the ONT is in bridge mode it is2000 bytes
.Can't this be an issue with the lack of cpu power when it comes to PPPoE encapsulation?
-
Hi @abpostelnicu - I can only recall some previous reports that the largest MTU for AmpliFi is 1500, and someone mentioned 1492 for PPPoE which isn’t ideal for some providers
When you direct connect to the ONT with your laptop and do a ping MTU test, what is the default MTU and the largest MTU without fragmentation?
If you then connect through the AmpliFi router, what results do you get to a WAN side address?
And what results do you get to a LAN side client?
There were reports that AmpliFi was still using 1500 on the LAN side for wireless clients causing fragmentation with PPPoE services and failures to connect to some banks that block fragmented packets for example
If your direct ONT connection Is using ~2000 and AmpliFi is utilizing a smaller MTU and/or fragmenting packets you will probably see a speed drop
Does your ISP require a VLAN ID to be set?
Not sure if it matters...
-
@Derek-Saville I don't use VLAN.
Using Amplifi the default MTU is 1492.Using a direct connection I can reach:
╰─$ ping -D -s 1466 yahoo.com PING yahoo.com (72.30.35.10): 1466 data bytes 556 bytes from amplifi.lan (192.168.168.1): frag needed and DF set (MTU 1492) Vr HL TOS Len ID Flg off TTL Pro cks Src Dst 4 5 00 d605 562a 0 0000 40 01 0a9f 192.168.168.141 72.30.35.10
Using the direct connection i get the exact same MTU, 1492.
-
Hi @abpostelnicu - so not an MTU issue...have you tried enabling the Switch Buffers setting in the web UI to see if it makes a difference?
Are you running IPv4 or IPv6?
-
@Derek-Saville I've enabled Switch Buffers and hardware nat got disabled but I've enabled it from the mobile app. I noticed no difference. Also I'm using IPv6 as well but it doesn't matter regarding the performance.
-
Hi @abpostelnicu - sounds like you may be at the PPPoE limit for the AmpliFi HD
Hopefully you will hear from others with similar setups what throughput they are achieving for comparison...

Thanks, I thought from the start that this is a hardware issue. I'll be returning this since for me this is unacceptable.
-
@abpostelnicu Grab a support file, I can take a look at it.
-
@UI-JT Do you want me to do first a speed test and after generate the support file? Where should I send it?
-
@abpostelnicu Sure, you can do it from the web UI or app: https://help.amplifi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360033122174-Downloading-Support-Information-
