Add a Alien standalone to Mesh bundle?
-
Hiya guys. Does anyone know if you can add another alien to a mesh bundle? I know the mesh point is hard coded to it’s Alien it came with, but can another alien tango with them and be accepted? Mostly worried the mesh point will not forward any connections to the new alien.

@Anthony-Stebbins The mesh point cannot be removed from the kit, but stand alone Alien routers can be added to the kit. When you add an additional stand alone Alien router to a kit, it will work in conjunction with the existing meshpoint, so no need to worry about the mesh point not forwarding any connections or data.

What do the little blue dots under each mesh point on the mobile app mean?
-
@StanleyF The dots indicate how many hops the data has to travel to get back to the router. dot dash dot means the mesh point has a direct connection to the router. dot dash dot dash dot mean that mesh point travels through another mesh point before reaching the router, so on and so forth.

@UI-Brett thanks

Another related question. If a router unit is being used as a mesh point (and I have 3 of these) and is connected via Cat5 cable back to the Router, would it still show the dot/dash blue line? Im getting "good" at best and "too far" sometimes with Router mesh points hard wired off the actual Router?

Hi @StanleyF - It sounds like your additional Aliens being used as mesh points (RAMP) are still operating in wireless backhaul mode
Have you enabled wired Ethernet backhaul for each RAMP in the app?
Instructions can be found here...

@StanleyF The symbol it would show would look something like this. <--->
-
thanks I'll try this over weekend. Its a real challenge for me. Ive got lots of hardware but need help to make it work together
-
Hi @StanleyF - you should be fine once you get wired Ethernet backhaul properly enabled for the 3 RAMPs
I personally would power off all 3 and then follow the instructions to enable them one at a time so they are not tripping over themselves
...connected via Cat5 cable
Do you have ‘Enhaced’ Cat5e or regular Cat5 cables for the backhaul?
Cat5 can only go up to 100 Mbps, so if your Internet speed is higher than that, the cables may limit throughput
Cat5e goes up to 1000 Mbps and matches the ports on the Alien
-
Thanks Derek, Im sure its basic Cat5, bought on Amazon and dont recall any special wording. Does the Cat 5 connection only help backhaul or does it also strengthen the signal at that mesh point?

Hi @StanleyF - if the cables were purchased on Amazon then they are most likely Cat5e
The older 100 Mbps Cat5 cables pretty much don't exist anymoreThe cables would not affect the WiFi signal strength of the mesh points
You would only notice it by doing speed tests while connected to a mesh point where older Cat5 cables would slow down the connection to the main router compared to Cat5e
-
Hey so in my app it looks like <…> except the dots are in the middle. I know for sure that the cable is directly connected to the router. Can you explain?
Thank you,

@xusarmy That set of symbols means they are connected via ethernet backhaul, and not wirelessly. Since there are no hops to count with a wired connection, that symbol wont change unless that setting is disabled
