UPNP on by Default; Why?

For at least 20 years I have seen heard and read knowledgable security people rant about the insecurity if UPNP, yet it is still on by default for too many consumer routers. I understand that it makes it easier for the less technical to add devices and grant access for some apps on their network, but it does so with high-security risk potential. Here is a link to an article that gives some historical facts about the dangers of UPNP.
Are there reasons besides the ones I mentioned that this is still being done?
