Orientation of the router matter?
-
I was just wondering if the orientation of the router mattered? I had a space all picked out but obviously I didnt realize how tall this thing was. I actually built a couple stands so that I could lay it on its side as you can see in the picture.
Ive done some speed tests and it seems to be fine, just wondered if anyone else have done something similar

After doing some testing, it looks like it doesn't matter whether its on its side or standing straight up.

@xusarmy It may matter somewhat, your basically changing the polarity of all the antennas by 90 degrees.

@xusarmy placing the Alien router/access point on its side instead of vertically can cause major overheat issues. These routers run quite hot (140-160° or more), and that heat is exhausted via vents near the top of the router/AP on the back of the router. That’s why blocking or obstructing those vents by placing the router/AP on its side could cause overheat issues (random reboots, shut downs, connectivity issues, etc.).

Thank you!! So far the temperature of the router is rock steady at 140 degrees. In the picture above, Im not blocking any of the vents on the back or the top, plus I have about another 3ft behind it for air flow.

@xusarmy great! I just wasn’t sure if you’d checked to make sure there was sufficient cooling airflow. Not everybody thinks about that. My Alien(s) sit pretty solidly at 140-145° (I’ve got two Alien routers as a mesh network).

Yup, same here, and have one more on the way.

@xusarmy woohoo! You’ll find it real easy to add it to your network, takes about 3 minutes if you use the AMPLIFI app.
