Cannot see Wifi5 5.0Ghz channel

  • Hello everyone,

I recently got the Alien as my Orbi RBK50 (router + satellite) stopped working - it had been nothing but pain with the Orbi. Their support is a joke!

With the Alien (1 router), running for now a week, things have been great and stable. However, the speeds are a lot lower than I had hoped.

    My details:
    AT&T Uverse - 1Gb connection
Pace 5268AC Gateway in IP passthrough (through the DMZ option in Firewall)
    Wifi turned off
Home size 2200 sqft 2 story
Alien centrally placed in the house

    Using a 2017 Macbook Pro:
    Direct connection with cat 7 to Alien - 900 - 950 Mbps
At the router with Wifi (common SSID) - 300 - 325 Mbps

I separated the SSIDs and tested the down speeds again at the router:
    5.0 Ghz wifi 6 band - 240 Mbps
    2.4 Ghz wifi 6 band - 70 Mbps
5.0 Ghz wifi 5 band - not visible
(down speeds are average of Speedtest and Fast.com taken 3 times each)

I am not sure why this would be?

Since the macbook pro is obviously not a wifi 6 device, I wanted to check the wifi 5 speeds specifically for this router.

I have switched on the additional SSID for the 5.0 Ghz.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

By default, the SSID name for the Additional 5Ghz radio will be the same as your common SSID. Unless you change the SSID's, your devices will pick them up as the same network and not show multiples in your network list. Could this be why it is not visible?
