5ghz questions
-
Hello,
New Alien Mesh system user here. Got it setup today using wired backbone. I noticed that both Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 5ghz radios are enabled by default.
Is that expected?
Wouldn’t they conflict with one another?
Does the Mesh unit always mirror the router in terms of radios enabled, etc? Thanks
-
@Mario00064 It does not conflict. I setup my separate channel with a different name, and moved all the older slow devices to it, and it helped my overall wireless performance a lot. I noted in my tinkering, that each channel needs to be setup on your mesh nodes. Some information may be mirrored, but they all seem individually configurable.

Thank you for the info. That’s very interesting. I have both 5ghz radios sharing the same SSID. Is that wrong?
Regarding Mesh, you’re saying I have to go into the app and manually match the settings from the router?
-
@Mario00064 I have done it both ways, but I experimented with the various settings and found the best overall performance was to use that separate 5Ghz channel for non AX devices, and that improved performance on my AX network, and works great of all the slower devices on the 5Ghz channel. This way also seemed to net the best mesh to mesh performance.

In my case I don’t actually own any AX devices yet so perhaps it doesn’t even matter

@Mario00064 said in 5ghz questions:
That might be true, however, you could separate your TV's and other low end connections from your phones, tablets and PC's and see better performance. Might as well use them!!

@Mario00064 I run a Roku TV and an xBox on Ethernet port, which nets me better than WiFi performance on those devices.

Follow-up question. Is it possible to have the router and mesh point to use different channels for each band? For example, router using channel 11 for 2.4ghz and mesh using channel 1?
-
@Mario00064 this is not possible with that product.
-
@UI-AmpliFi Thank you. Disappointing for a $700 product

@Mario00064 The router and MeshPoint may be using different channels, however the user selection is only available for the primary router. Hope this clarifies the answer more.
