Slow Speed

  • I've 1Gig Fiber, I'm not getting the full speed that I'm paying for. Device is in bridge mode, running beta, on 5G radio/additional SSID, and channel set to 44. This combination seems to perform better, but the speed doesn't go beyond 650M. It's worse on WiFi 6.

  • Hi @prashm - what is the MIMO spec of the client device you are testing with?

The maximum 4x4 802.11ac WiFi-5 throughput on the Additional 5 GHz Radio is 1733 Mbps

If your testing on a typical 2x2 MIMO client then the maximum throughput is 866 Mbps in ideal conditions with zero interference or contention

So 650 Mbps would be pretty normal to expect for 2x2 clients doing an internet speed test on the Additional 5 GHz radio, all things considered

If your client is 3x or 4x MIMO capable then you may need to look at other factors

  • Thanks Derek! Just noticed it doesn't support 802.11AX. Are you saying there's no point in taking 1G speed? I see that transmit rate is nearly 1G.

  • I'm testing with MACBook Pro 13", which I believe has 3 antennas. I understand it may not support WiFi 6

  • Are you saying there's no point in taking 1G speed?

Hi @prashm -no, only that speed testing can be complicated

Here is a website many recommend for helping to explain why maximum speeds are not always achievable in the real world...

It looks like your client is 3x3 and currently negotiating a speed to the access point of 975 Mbps

You can select Client Details in the AmpliFi app and confirm the AP is also registering the same link speed and number of MIMO chains

That speed is theoretical and doesn’t take into account any other factors such as latency from the ISP and Internet speed test site, or airtime fairness of other clients in the area, etc
