Speedtest Feature Request
-
Hello,
I would like to know what Alien router (main router, mesh router etc.) I'm connected to when performing speed tests within the AmpliFi app.
-
@coldplay5467 As I understand it, the built in speed test is run from the main router. Results are reported to the device that requested the test, but no speed test data runs on that device.
-
@mleeds Yeah but after you run the speed test it shows you the speed between your device and the router which is really cool. I'd like to see what my speed is between my device, the mesh point (if connected to it) and then to the main router
Makes sense?

@coldplay5467 I guess, although that would depend on whether there were data flows that were speed dependent. Do keep in mind that kit mesh points will be half the speed of the main router. You can do some testing of performance between two devices on the same mesh point, for example. iPerf and other tools can be used for this. There was a long thread on this topic at some point in the past. You might also spend some time reading this: https://www.duckware.com/tech/wifi-in-the-us.html

@coldplay5467 Hi. iOS application has a feature to test your speeds using iperf3 server running on the Alien router. The iperf3 server is run on the main router and if you use meshpoints the speed could be impacted due to additional hop between the meshpoint and the router.
The reason behind this approach is to simulate maximum speeds for your Wi-Fi clients in your network without the dependency of your ISP capabilities.

@UI-AmpliFi where can I find the instructions?
-
@coldplay5467 all you need to do is launch a speed test from your AmpliFi app on an iOS device while you are connected to the router on a local network.
-
@UI-AmpliFi Let me know if I understand this correctly. You are saying the AmpliFi app has an internal implementation of iPerf, and the Alien router has one as well.
Is this also true for the HD router?
-
@UI-AmpliFi I'm on Android so I guess it is only IOS? Because I only see ISP test in App. Iperf would be cool.
-
@mleeds @newfubq For now this feature is now supported only for Alien routers and iOS mobile devices.
-
@UI-AmpliFi can you add the iperf feature on the mesh nodes as well? It would be nice to see the WiFi performance every step of the way (including performance from mesh nodes to main router). Thanks!
-
@coldplay5467 it never crossed my mind until you said this as I have two routers in mesh and have a mesh test from the screen. But I guess the actual mesh kits do not have any such test. Makes sense to have it in the app

Hi. The iperf3 speed test for Alien is included in the latest Android beta release 1.14.3. You can enroll in the Android beta program from your Google Play Store.
