Parental control of websites
-
Website filtering based on content/type that i can assign to each device/group. EG kids devices in the group can then be blocked from R18, Hate, etc. That would be awesome and make the Amplifi a real one stop shop device.
-
@stewart-bryan - Has there been an update to the firmware that enables web content filtering by category (porn, gaming, social media, etc.) to each device/group?
-
@michael-tembrina You could use OpenDNS which does exactly what you want and then use their DNS servers in the AHD configuration. Let me know if this is too little information.
-
@david-miller Yes. I am familiar with OpenDNS. I want an integrated filter within Amplifi that I can control within the app. Amplifi is missing out on a tremendous marketing endeavor since this is a relatively easy feature to implement. MANY families would buy Ampilifi for this feature.
-
@david-miller Could you please elaborate for me? I'm familiar(ish) with OpenDNS but don't know what you mean about "the AHD configuration".
-
@shane-milton To begin, OpenDNS is a DNS filter service. So, if you set up an account (they have free and paid - I have the paid account so I can customize and it's about $20 a year), you can then easily configure your AHD router to do all DNS lookups via OpenDNS. Where is that done? App-->Router-->Internet-->Primary/Secondary DNS Address. Simply change those values to OpenDNS's primary and secondary DNS servers (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220).
Now, on the other side, you have to browse to your OpenDNS server and connect your account to your home network.
Let me know if you need anything further.

Can you confirm that this also works for mobile apps like the YouTube app or the Netflix app? I don't think the apps actually use DNS at all do they?
-
@kees-de-waard OpenDNS allows you to block by category but it also allows you to block (or always allow) a specific domain. As soon as I blocked netflix.com, that killed it on both the browser AND the mobile app. YouTube is more tricky. Some kind soul on the OpenDNS forums provided this:
The website itself (works for PCs):
youtube.comThumbnail domains (PCs, tablets, and phones):
ytimg.com
ytimg.l.google.comYoutube Applications:
youtube.l.google.com
googlevideo.com
-
@david-miller So I follow along with everything you're saying. But how does that allow me to filter devices on a per-device or per-group basis without micro-managing per-device DNS settings?
-
@shane-milton I don't know how to do that. You're asking questions beyond me. Sounds like you need a serious firewall.
-
@david-miller Ahh. You originally replied to requests asking to do this on a per-device or per-group basis. I guess you meant to exclude that part in what OpenDNS can provide. Thanks for clarifying that!
-
@shane-milton Yeah, I would like to see OpenDNS provide what you're asking for. Since it's broad at the router/DNS server level, it applies to all devices (at least that is how it works currently).
-
@david-miller Is there DDNS capability on the router? If not, how is OpenDNS kept current with the router public IP address which might change from time to time?
